The Step-by-Step Path

1. Discovery Flight (Intro Lesson)

Take the controls on a 30–60 minute flight with an instructor. We’ll show you the aircraft, answer your questions, and outline your training plan.

2. Medical Certificate

Before you can solo, you’ll need an FAA medical exam with an Aviation Medical Examiner. Private Pilot requires at least a Third-Class medical, and Commercial requires a Second-Class medical.

3. Student Pilot Certificate

Apply online through IACRA. Minimum age: 16 for airplanes.

4. Private Pilot License (PPL)

Learn takeoffs, landings, navigation, airspace, and emergency procedures. FAA minimum is 40 hours of flight time (most students fly 55–70).

5. Time Building

After earning your PPL, you’ll log cross-country and solo hours toward Instrument and Commercial requirements.

6. Instrument Rating (IR)

Learn to fly solely by reference to instruments and operate safely in more weather conditions. Requires 40 hours of instrument time.

7. Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

Gain advanced skills and professionalism to fly for hire. Part 61 requires 250 hours total.

8. Optional Add-Ons

  • Multi-Engine Rating
  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI, CFII, MEI)
